Yes, the Hot Wheels MAD MIKE DRIFT ATTACK is a real car; The 787D is a 5-rotor, drifting dream come true.
Leave it to “Mad” Mike Whiddett to build another drift car. He has been doing that for years… This time, #Mad Mike sought out to complete his dream project of building the wildest drift car he could think of. In this build, he would also seek to build the world’s first 5-rotor engine. He teamed with Kei Miura San of Rocket Bunny to build the wildest chassis / body combo — inspired by the 1991 Le Mans winning, Mazda 787B.
The majority of Mad Mike’s builds have been #Mazdas so it’s only fitting that his ultimate drift car would be inspired by the ultimate 1:1 Mazda. The Mazda 787B winning at Le Mans in 1991 was really an incredible story. Collectors have been clamoring for a replica of this car to be made with its iconic orange & green deco, but there are a few licensing hurdles to get over before that can be done.
#Mad Mike has named his creation: the 787D. The white car with blue and silver graphics falls in line with Mike’s other creations, but this one does features the RENOWN name — along with Hot Wheels — in that argyle textile pattern that made the 1991 Le Mans winner so iconic. Check out the video below of Mad Mike’s unveiling of the 787D on December 2nd at Hampton Downs in Waikato, New Zealand.
For Hot Wheels collectors, we have known of this car for months now — we just didn’t know it was based on a real 1:1. I can’t speak for every collector out there, but many assumed that this is simply one of those Hot Wheels fantasy designs designed by a guest designer. We knew that Whiddett had been by the Hot Wheels Design Center in El Segundo, California. We just didn’t know it was to drop off his plans for a vehicle he had yet to finish.
When you start to really look at the Hot Wheels #Mad Mike Drift Attack, you can see it’s resemblance to the 787B. And since Hot Wheels also has a #Mazda 787B casting, it seemed only fitting to get the two together since I don’t believe there are any images of the 1:1 787D with a 787B — yet.
The graphics on this #2023 Hot Wheels release leave a bit more to be desired. Since this car debuts at the basics level in the mainline, you aren’t going to get the full wrap a car of this caliber deserves. Instead, you get the tampo passes on the hood and sides. This would be a fun vehicle to see go premium as there is definitely room for added details.
With the #Mad Mike Drift Attack first appearing in the last mix for 2023 — the “Q” case assortments, and subsequently 2024 “A” — there wasn’t room for an additional colorway. Fortunately, we will see an all-gray version of this car appear in early 2024 as part of the 2024 HW Modified series.
