- HISTORY ASPECTS:
- The A-10 “Blacksnakes” is a legendary Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, a formidable close air support aircraft widely recognized for its toughness and firepower. This particular aircraft belongs to the 163rd Fighter Squadron (FS) of the Indiana Air National Guard (ANG).
- The A-10 Thunderbolt II, more commonly known by the nicknames “Warthog” or “Hog” is a single-seat cantilever low-wing all metal monoplane used for close air support by the US Air Force. The aircraft has superior loitered capabilities and maintains excellent maneuverability at low speeds and altitude because of its large wing area. The high wing ratio also allows short takeoffs and landings, and its simple design allows operations from forward airfields with limited facilities.
- The A-10 was designed for short-term response against enemy armored vehicles. The main feature of the plane is a nose-mounted 30mm GAU-8/A Avenger Gatling-type cannon. One of the most powerful aircraft cannons ever flown, it fires large, depleted uranium armor-piercing shells. The 163rd Fighter Squadron is a unit of the Indiana Air National Guard 122nd Fighter Wing located at Fort Wayne, Indiana. They changed their names from Marksmen to Blacksnakes in 1997 for a less aggressive undertone. They have been operating A-10’s since 2010.
- The “Blacksnakes” have a rich history of service, with notable participation in various conflicts. During the Gulf War, the A-10s played a critical role in supporting ground troops and engaging enemy targets with their distinctive GAU-8 Avenger 30mm cannon and precision-guided munitions. In more recent conflicts, such as the War in Afghanistan and the Iraq War, the A-10s continued to prove their effectiveness in providing close air support to troops on the ground.
- The 1:140 scale model of the A-10 “Blacksnakes” captures the essence of this iconic aircraft and the storied history of the 163rd FS. Whether you are an aviation enthusiast, a collector of military models, or simply admire the remarkable capabilities of the A-10 Thunderbolt II, this model is a perfect addition to your collection. Display it with pride and celebrate the legacy of the “Blacksnakes” and their dedication to supporting troops and protecting freedom.
